Hundreds of people were still on Vilakazi street in Soweto late on Friday night, celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela.
The former president and his ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela once lived in a house there.
It is now a museum.
Along the street, several large groups sang struggle songs, while others sang and chanted in a nearby restaurant.
Some people carried their children on their shoulders, singing and celebrating with them.
"It's a historic time, there's no way I would let my son miss it," said Vusi Tshabalala. He had brought his wife and child with him.
One man said he had travelled from Midrand.
"I'm here with my boys from Midrand. Everyone knew that this will be the place to be," said Tshego Morwee.
He said he and his friends had planned to pass the time at local restaurants, but "the vibe on the streets was better".
The people of Soweto had vowed to give Mandela a good send-off.
Many said they were celebrating his life and legacy.
Some continued to pose for pictures outside the Mandela House Museum.
Mandela died at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg, on Thursday night, and will be buried at Qunu, in the Eastern Cape, on December 15.
