African Independent Congress councillor Margaret Arnolds was elected as the new Johannesburg Council Speaker on Thursday.

Arnolds received 137 votes, the DA's Alex Christians garnered 68 votes, and the UDM's Yongama Zigebe received five votes.
She succeeds ActionSA's Nobuhle Mthembu, who was ousted last month in a motion of no-confidence vote.
This is her second stint as speaker following her resignation in 2024.
Arnolds currently serves as Finance MMC under Mayor Dada Morero.
"I am committed to upholding the integrity of this institution, ensuring that the council operates within the bounds of the law," she said in her acceptance speech.
"I also recommit myself to the government of local unity, a partnership that, while not always easy, is grounded in a shared commitment to service delivery, stability, and putting the needs of our communities above political divisions,
"If we are to succeed, it will be because we chose cooperation over conflict, purpose over partnership, and service over self-interest," she said.
