The latest fatality marks the second victim to succumb to their injuries in hospital, while five of the patrollers were declared dead on the scene.

On Tuesday, a 27-year-old Zimbabwean national appeared before the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court.

The man, whose identity has been withheld pending further investigations, faces 16 counts emanating from the attack and the discovery of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition when he was arrested.

“He is facing multiple charges, including six counts of murder for five males and one female, five counts of attempted murder for four males and one female, and two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances,” said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.

“The charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of ammunition, and being illegal in the country that he previously appeared for on a separate matter were joined to the current case.”

The accused abandoned bail at his first appearance before the murder, and attempted murder charges were added.

The matter returns to court on 17 April.
