Mashatile encourages ANC leaders to make time for families

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has encouraged ANC leaders to spend time with their families in the wake of David Mabuza’s passing.

Mashatile’s remarks came after the sister of the late former deputy president told mourners in Hazyview, Mpumalanga, on Thursday that they hardly spent time with Mabuza due to his commitment to the ANC and the government.

"Even our children never spent time with their uncle (Mabuza). They hardly knew him. They just saw him on television. My brother dedicated his life to the ANC,” she said.

"We sometimes complained how busy he was and wished he could spend more time with us. We understood that his heart did not belong to us only, but we had to share it with society."

During his address, Mashatile thanked the family for allowing Mabuza to serve the people.

Three memorial services were held in Mpumalanga to commemorate the life of the province’s erstwhile premier, who died last week at the age of 64.

"I think it's a good lesson to all of us leaders to say, yes, we know you work hard, continue to work hard, but do make time for family,” Mashatile said.

"Family is very important, and I think that's the message that has reached us very well, and we've all taken that to heart. I think it's something that all of us should do as leaders, let us make time for our families."
