On Easter weekend, Mashatile said that his motorcade was shot at last month on the N12 after attending an ANC meeting in Boksburg.

He spoke to the media in Mofolo Soweto on Tuesday after visiting to honour anti-apartheid activists.

"That issue is taken care of by the state. The presidential protection and the police are jointly looking into the matter,” said Mashatile.

"They are investigating. When they are done, they'll tell us what actually happened.”

When asked if he has since beefed up his security detail following the incident, Mashatile said that he believes his security is 'adequate'.

"The president and the deputy president do not determine their security. It's an assessment that is done by the security cluster."

"At the moment, we are convinced that both the president and deputy president do have adequate security. If they think that they need to be beefed up, they will do so. But it's not out of our request."

Meanwhile, the South African Police Service has declined to give details surrounding the incident.

"SAPS does not discuss safety and security aspects concerning the President, the Deputy President, including cabinet members, in the public domain," said National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.

The Presidency is yet to issue a media statement on the alleged incident.
