Matsena murder-accused abandons bail application

Monoko Francis Thoka (29), accused of murdering Gauteng Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) and chairperson of the provincial Safety and Security Portfolio Committee, Mapiti Matsena, appeared at the Pretoria North magistrate’s court on Monday morning.

Matsena died after he was stabbed in the chest in Doornpoort last week.
North Gauteng Regional spokesperson for the NPA, Lumka Mahanjana said Thoka accused abandoned his bail application on Monday.
The matter was remanded to 24 August 2020 for further investigation and to consider whether it should be heard in the High court.
The ANC has applauded the police for the arrest of a suspect in the case.
"The murder of Comrade Mapiti has devastated the ANC, alliance, mass democratic movement, and all freedom-loving people of South Africa.," said ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe.
"Death has robbed us of a committed and dedicated servant of our revolution,” he added.
