On Friday, the entity held a media briefing to give an update on the status of the systems.

Head of technical services Mzakhe Mtshweni said the water supply at the South Hill Tower and Diepsloot reservoir had yet to be restored.

Affected areas include Diepsloot, Riverside, and Steyn City, where water tankers have been deployed.

Mtshweni added water tankers had also been deployed to parts of Midrand.

“Obviously with a system of that size, you would still have some pockets that are still not getting water or experiencing low supply. Those we are still supplying with mobile water tankers, but I have to indicate that the number of tanks that we’ve reduced the number of tanks that we’re using within the Midrand system.”

The Palmiet System experienced power outages on Monday and Wednesday, resulting in supply challenges affecting reservoirs in Sandton and Midrand and the South Hills Tower which services South Hills and Linmeyer.

On Wednesday, Eskom refuted Johannesburg Water’s claim that a power interruption at the Palmiet substation prevented it from pumping water at full capacity.

According to Joburg Water, the power outage affected the Linksfield and Alexander Park reservoirs, the Sandton and Midrand systems. The South Hill tower had been experiencing problems since the week before.

“Midrand, Linksfield, and South Hill tower reservoir systems were severely impacted by the power trip. The Sandton system and Alexander Park reservoir systems’ water supply were not interrupted due to interventions implemented before the power trip.”

The entity said officials were investigating the possibility of an air lock restricting water supply to the Diepsloot reservoir, while the South Hill tower was experiencing no water supply due to the low bulk supply reservoir levels.

Water tankers have been sent to all affected areas.
