‘Millionaire’ WSU student appears in court

Sibongile Mani, the Walter Sisulu
University student at the centre of an accidental R14-million payout from
National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), handed herself over to the Hawks
in East London on Tuesday.

The unit’s spokesperson in the Eastern Cape, Anelisa Feni, says they have a strong case against Mani.
"We conducted our investigation, and through the evidence that we collected, we arrested her today. Unfortunately I cannot go into the merits of the investigation.”

Mani briefly appeared at the East London Magistrates Court on charges of theft. The case was postponed to next month.
"She was released on a warning and she is expected to appear again on July 2," says Feni.
Mani allegedly spent more than R800,000 after an administrative error saw her receive R14-million for food and book allowance from NSFAS.
The funds were paid over in June 2017 but the error was only discovered in early August.
