Mkhwanazi’s security ‘beefed up’ - Masemola

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has confirmed that Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s security has been increased due to threats to his life.

On Wednesday, Masemola briefed the media ahead of a firearm destruction exercise in Vanderbijl Park.
On Sunday, KZN’s top cop held a media briefing in which he made explosive allegations against high-ranking officials, including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya.

The provincial commissioner linked the police minister to attempted murder-accused tenderpreneur Vusi ‘Cat’ Matlala, through Mchunu’s associate Brown Mogotsi, and further alleged political and internal interference in the work of the political killings task team.

“In terms of physical protection, we know that he’s been getting threats to his life in that province. We have beefed up his security,” Masemola said.
Despite criticism from some corners, including forensic investigator Paul O’ Sullivan, he said the commissioner was within his rights when he called Sunday’s briefing.
Masemola said Mkhwanazi informed him beforehand that he would assemble the media.
“Provincial commissioners have the prerogative to brief the media. He did indicate that he is going to brief the media on the work of the political task team, for which, for quite a long time, we hadn’t done a briefing. So, one does not have a problem with him briefing the media.”
Asked if he would act against Mkhwanazi for ‘breaking ranks’, Masemola said he does not intend to persecute Mkhwanazi or any other member of the police service.
