Momberg release should not encourage continued racism - SAHRC

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says the release of convicted racist Vicki Momberg should not send the wrong message.

Momberg benefitted from the special remission of sentences announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Reconciliation Day.
Fees Must Fall activist Kanya Cekeshe and abaThembu king Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo were also released under the remission of sentences

Momberg was found guilty on four counts of crimen injuria after she called a black officer the k-word 48 times following a smash and grab incident in 2016.
The racist rant was captured on a video that went viral and sparked outrage.
She was later sentenced to two years in jail with one year suspended.
Momberg was set free after spending only a few months in prison but was rearrested in November after she failed to appear in court in August.
The SAHRC's CEO Tseliso Thipanyane said the release should not be seen as encouraging continued racism.
"I guess this should also be an opportunity for her and other people to reflect on how they want to engage in a more meaningful manner in our country as far as advancing democracy and protection of human rights,” said Thipanyane.
