This comes as parts of South Africa, including Gauteng, are in the grips of a bitter cold front following a fairly warm start to the winter season.

In KwaZulu-Natal and the parts of the Eastern Cape, there has been heavy rainfall.

The MEC for the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Zolila Williams visited Gqeberha on Monday, to lead the provincial disaster management center, to assess the extent of the disaster, and to visit the residents who have been adversely affected by the floods.

The worst affected area in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro is Kariega where hundreds of people have been evacuated and placed in community halls.

The Snow Report Southern Africa’s Richard le Sueur says parts of the Free State can expect some snowfall from Tuesday.

“We have seen snow falling over the last few days, mainly overnight. So far, we have seen a fair bit of snow come in the Northern Cape earlier today in areas like the Sutherland and Carnavon have had a few good centimetres on the ground.

“In the Eastern Cape, we have seen snow of higher elevation in the Rhodes area. The heavier snow is likely to start from this evening. That will mainly be in the Eastern Cape and Lesotho.”

He says more snow is forecast on Tuesday, and this will also affect the Free State in areas like Clarens and Fouriesburg.

Le Sueur says Gautengers may not get their snow this time around, but there's still a chance.

“Last year’s snowfall in Joburg was great. We have been watching for a few years. It’s pretty much every 12 years or so that we get that Joburg snow.  But have had Gauteng snow on the radar regularly, it probably won’t materialise with this snow event, but I think there’s a pretty reasonable chance that we might get some this year.”

Parts of the country have experienced snowfall since the weekend, with the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, and Free State expected to register more snowfall today and tomorrow.

Last July, Gauteng residents woke up to the phenomenal first snowfall event in 12 years.

Le Sueur says they are keeping an eye out for Gauteng snow as the winter season progresses.
