Morero hails council support for stability in Joburg
Updated | By Lebohang Ndashe
City of Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero says the defeat of Wednesday’s motion of no confidence against him clearly shows that the majority of political parties — representing the city’s residents — are choosing stability, continuity, and improved service delivery.

The motion, brought by the Democratic Alliance (DA), accused Morero of failing to address service delivery issues in South Africa’s economic hub.
However, it was rejected by the African National Congress (ANC) with backing from its coalition partners, including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
ActionSA chose to abstain.
Out of the total council votes, 144 councillors opposed the motion, 75 supported it, and 43 abstained.

Morero acknowledged the city is facing serious challenges but expressed confidence in ongoing efforts to turn things around.
“We have put in place solutions and interventions that are moving us in the right direction. We are building the Johannesburg we want to see. The beauty of this process is that we are supported by the Presidential Support Package, the Bomb Squad, Private Sector and civil society,” he said.
He also reaffirmed the city’s commitment to the Digital Public Infrastructure (IDP), its allocated budget, and a high-impact service delivery programme aimed at boosting Johannesburg’s economy.
“We reaffirm our commitment to continue implementing the High-impact service delivery programme. We remain committed to grow the economy of Johannesburg and this will be supported by the Digital Public Infrastructure that will be rolled out in this financial year.”
In the same council meeting — the 31st Ordinary Council sitting — Speaker Nobuhle Mthembu was removed through a no-confidence motion tabled by Al Jama-ah.
Meanwhile, a similar motion against Johannesburg Chief Whip Sithembiso Zungu failed to pass.
