Motshekga: You don’t need SANDF experience to be defence minister
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Angie Motshekga says she is ready to assume her new responsibility as the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans.

Motshekga served in the Basic Education portfolio since 2009, following her tenure in the Gauteng provincial legislature's education portfolio.
President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed her to succeed Thandi Modise in the Ministry of Defence and Military Veterans, a move that surprised many who anticipated her departure from the cabinet.
Motshekga holds several qualifications, including a Master’s degree from the University of Witwatersrand, a Bachelor of Educational Science degree from Wits, a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree from the University of the North, and a Higher Diploma in Education.
Despite questions surrounding her new appointment, Motshekga believes she is prepared for the challenges ahead.
"I am not going to fight. I work with a team of experts based on the policies of the governing party. Even in education, I was not teaching; I was working at the policy level.
"So to say I should be in the army, as if I was in the classroom, I was not in the classroom then, but at least perhaps I had an understanding. But here, I have a sense of what is important for the safety of the country. I have the support of the president, and I feel safe and fine.”
