Mpumalanga NPA claims 100% conviction rate in femicide cases

The National Prosecuting Authority in Mpumalanga says
it has secured a conviction in each of the femicide cases it prosecuted in 2021
and the first quarter of 2022.

The announcement comes amid renewed concern over the country’s rape and femicide statistics following the gang rape of eight women in Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg.
Provincial NPA head Nkebe Kanyane briefed the media at the Mpumalanga High Court on Thursday morning.
“On the total number of cases in murder prosecution - we were able to find guilty convictions of 195 out of 257,” she said.
“Out of these murders there’s also the conviction rate of femicide, this is when a woman is killed by an intimate partner, we achieved 100% conviction.
“We want to show that our division gives specific priority focus on these types of cases to send a strong message that the criminal justice is there to serve and protect women and vulnerable groups.”
The high court and regional courts also managed to secure a conviction in 70% of gender-based violence cases.
