Tshwane Mayor Solly Msimanga has been selected at the party’s Gauteng Premier candidate for the 2019 national elections.

The DA made the announcement in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Msimanga has vowed to restore the province its former glory should be be elected as the premier of Gauteng at next year’s polls.

"The path we have currently seen ourselves on is wrong. We have taken a wrong turn that has been laid by the late father of the nation Nelson Mandela."

He said the African National Congress (ANC), which is currently in control of the province, does not put the needs of the people first.

Rather, it rewards those who have been implicated in corruption and maladministration.

"Continually empty false promises have been made, relegating the people of Gauteng to the last place, as the self-enrich corrupt and the corruption of the ANC keeps holding us back,” Msimanga said.

He believes the upcoming elections provides the people with a chance to get the province back on track.

"It will be their chance to choose, we can be led to an unequal, more corrupt and uncaring government or we could be led to a more prosperous province."

Only the DA can bring the change that builds a better future for the people of the province, said Msimanga.

The mayor will, from Wednesday onwards, embark on a listening tour around the province to engage the people of the province.
