Gauteng’s top cop says there have been more than 60,000 arrests since the start of his tenure.

The province’s police commissioner, Tommy Mthombeni, has been in office for just over 100 days.
Speaking to SABC News on Thursday, Mthombeni said the 69,435 arrests were for contact crimes, murder and attempted murder.
Over 1,900 firearms were also recovered.
The murder rate in Gauteng rose by three per cent in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to the previous year.
Of the nearly 1,800 people killed, 214 were women and 50 were children.
“We uprooted corruption, and as a result, we have arrested 51 South African Police Services members for fraud, murder, corruption and rape,” Mthombeni said.
“Twelve of them have been discharged.”
Mthombeni said they are working around the clock to ensure the safety of motorists, especially in the Pretoria region.
In recent months, motorists have been terrorised by spiking incidents on the N1, N4 and the R80.
Thus far, 26 people have been arrested.
“We know for a fact that N3 on the highway, people were troubled by blue-light robberies, and we have arrested six people and four of them were fatally wounded,” added Mthombeni.
