The Department of Transport in the Eastern Cape has confirmed the death of 14 people following a head-on collision on the N9 between Graaff-Reinet and Middelburg on Monday.

Departmental spokesperson in the province, Unathi Binqose says an SUV carrying six occupants collided with a fully loaded minibus taxi travelling from the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape.
“It is alleged that the Hyundai Creta was travelling from Middelburg to Graaff-Reinet, while the Quantum was headed in the opposite direction towards Middelburg when they collided head-on.”
“Fourteen people have died on the scene and sadly six from the SUV are believed to be from the same family,” Binqose said.
“It's another head-on collision and the MEC for transport in the Eastern Cape is constantly calling for you and I to be extra vigilant, and to be patient with one another, to help us avoid avoidable accidents like head-on collisions that we have seen so many of in recent days.”
In another incident, Binqose reported the death of three people, and two others injured in a collision between a car and a van on the R61 road near Bizana.
Binqose says police have opened a culpable homicide case following the crash which happened Sunday evening.
