‘Never anti-power to deal with land invasions’ – Makhubo

The City of Johannesburg is gearing up to wage war against the surge in land invasions across the city.

This was the promise by Johannesburg Mayor Geoff Makhubo during his address to members of the community in Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg on Wednesday morning.

Makhubo launched the Joburg 10 Plus policing programme in the area, which aims to place at least 10 Johannesburg metro police officers in each ward in the city.

The event was also accompanied by a graduation ceremony of over a 1000 new metro police cops.

Makhubo warned that the south has recently seen an increase in illegal land occupation.

“So, the fight against these ‘landlords’ who prey on the poor, who take advantage of the poor because they are looking for shelter and they invade land, and they invade properties that are not theirs and they masquerade as if it is their properties and they rent them out to people or sell them to poor – that time has come to an end and we fight you tooth for a tooth and ensure we push you back,” said Makhubo.

The mayor stressed that land invaders need to be stopped or the cost of these illegal dwellings would be felt by future generations.

“It is never anti-power to deal with land invasions, uncontrolled growth of the city will in the future be very costly for future generations we have control it today.”
