Newborn found dead in Etwatwa storm drain

Emergency pesonnel in Ekurhuleni have confirmed the discovery of a newborn baby’s body in a stormwater drainage system in Gauteng Street near Rholihlahla Primary School in Etwatwa.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) said it received the distress call shortly after 19:20 on Saturday evening.
A rescue crew from the local fire station was immediately dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, emergency personnel located the lifeless body of a male newborn lodged inside the drain. Rescue workers successfully retrieved the body and called in paramedics for medical assistance.
"On assessment, the baby showed no signs of life," said Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesperson William Ntladi.
"Paramedics declared the infant deceased at the scene."
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has since taken over the scene and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
