The killing of the baboon, known as Raygun, last month sparked outrage among animal rights activists and the public.

The NSPCA's Wildlife Protection Unit conducted an investigation despite facing significant challenges, including evidence tampering and reluctance from the local community to cooperate.

A pathology report on Raygun’s remains confirmed that he had suffered injuries before his death.

“This was not an easy case. It was met with resistance at every turn. Despite the many obstacles, the NSPCA remained the driving force behind this investigation, ensuring that the case was pursued,” said NSPCA spokesperson Jacques Peacock.

"Due to legal constraints, details about the accused cannot be disclosed until court proceedings begin. The SAPS will now appoint an Investigating Officer to gather further statements and advance the legal process. However, the NSPCA has committed to following up on the case to ensure due process is observed."

The organisation emphasised that seeking justice for Raygun is part of a broader fight against animal cruelty. .

“We understand the frustration and anger of those who seek justice for Raygun, and we share it. We have done everything in our power to ensure this case moves forward. Now, the justice system must do its part, and we will continue to pursue this case through to its rightful conclusion,” Peacock said.
