NUM demands 15% wage hike for Eskom workers

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has written to cash-strapped Eskom to demand a 15% wage increase for its members.

The embattled power utility is set to start wage negotiations with NUM, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa and Solidarity in Sandton from Wednesday.
NUM national spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu says the union has officially submitted their wage demand, which includes a 15% wage increase across the board, a housing allowance increase of up to R7 000 and a standard R1000 cell phone allowance.
The union also wants Eskom to pay for an R1 500 electricity allowance, an R1 500 essential worker allowance once-off for the year, a performance bonus to be brought back to 25% of annual salary and for payday to be moved to Friday if and when the 26th is on a Sunday.
"The NUM urges the employer to negotiate in good faith. As a start, the NUM will not allow to have any of its conditions of service tempered within these negotiations. The apartheid wage gap should be finalised as per agreement," says Mammburu.
