Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu says officials from his department are working around the clock to provide water to communities in KwaZulu-Natal affected by the floods.

The minister briefed the media on Sunday together with mayors from affected municipalities.
“We are aware that many communities without water and those who are exposed to sewerage leakages due to damaged sanitation infrastructure,” he said.
“We want to assure them that we are working with the municipalities to address these.”
He said the total damage amounts to close to R2 billion.
“Umgeni Water has advised of several sites in KZN (in the south, central, north) where repairs will be affected. The estimated costs for those repairs are projected to be around cost R857 million.
“In iLembe, the costs are estimated at R63 million and just over R 12 million in uMgungundlovu, over R1 billion in eThekwini, and 60 million in Ugu.”
He says they are also concerned about the damage to sanitation infrastructure in the municipalities.
Mchunu says they are aware of the result in spillage leading to pollution in the river and the sea.
