Operation Shanela nabs 723 wanted suspects in Gauteng

Gauteng police have arrested 723 suspects who had been on the run for various crimes during Operation Shanela this past weekend.

The traced suspects where wanted for crimes including car hijacking, business robbery, house robbery, murder and rape.
One hundred and fifty-eight other suspects were arrested in Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Sedibeng and West Rand districts.
The Johannesburg operation, which targeted Honeydew and Cosmo City, netted 74 suspects.
Several unlicensed liquor outlets were also closed.
Meanwhile, 83 motorists were arrested for drunk driving across the province.
"These arrests should send a strong message to other motorists who get behind the steering wheel after having consumed liquor," said Acting Gauteng Police Commissioner Mbuso Khumalo.
