The Tshwane metro police have arrested more than 40 motorists for drunk driving.

The TMPD say the arrests were made in Akasia, Mamelodi, Pretoria West and Hatfield on Friday evening.
Metro police spokesperson Isaac Mahamba said 20 people were arrested in Akasia.
Fifteen of the 20 were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, while four people were arrested for possession of drugs, while one illegal immigrant was also taken into custody.
“In the Mamelodi area, nine drunk drivers were arrested. A 17-year-old boy was one of the youngest drunk drivers arrested with the highest alcohol reading of 0,41mg. He was also not in possession of a driver’s license,” Mahamba said.
“Furthermore, one taxi driver was charged with overloading after carrying 23 passengers in a 16-seater minibus.”
“In the Hatfield area, 138 vehicles were searched. Nine drunk drivers were arrested, one drunk driver amongst whom 9 was found in possession of two rifles and one 9 mm pistol with ammunition. The firearms were checked and were declared to be legal; firearm permits were also produced. He was then arrested for drunk driving and negligence in handling firearms.”
Mahamba called on young adults to take extra precautions when driving this Youth Month.
“Statistics indicate that young adults are mostly involved in vehicle accidents because of drunk driving,” said Mahamba.
He warned the public that these operations will continue in the whole of Tshwane to ensure compliance with the rules and regulations of the road.
