Over 400 mineworkers still underground at Gold One mine, says police

The South African Police Services has confirmed that over 400 workers at Gold One’s Modderfontein mine in Springs are still being held hostage underground.

On Tuesday morning, 107 miners made their way up after three days underground.
The workers were allegedly been prevented from coming back to the surface in what is believed to be a dispute between the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).
Police spokesperson Brenda Muridili says 15 armed men are holding the workers hostage.
"It has been confirmed by those who have been interviewed by Detectives that they were indeed held against their will by a group of about 15 or so.
“The two paramedics and security officers are among those who are still underground. The police and other role players will remain on site until the situation has been resolved," says Muridili.
Muridili says paramedics have since checked the group that resurfaced on site, and some have since been released to go home.
