Parliament has expressed its shock at the senseless killing of Honourable Khethamabala Petros “KP” Sithole, Deputy Chief Whip of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the National Assembly.

He was shot and killed at the Buyafuthi hostel in Katlehong on the East Rand.
In a statement released on Sunday, Parliament's Presiding Officers — National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza and National Council of Provinces Chairperson Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane — expressed shock and sorrow at the loss of a dedicated and widely respected Member of Parliament (MP).
"Parliament is reeling from the news of Hon. Sithole’s passing," said Parliamentary Spokesperson Moloto Mothapo.
"He was a principled, humble, and committed public servant whose work left a lasting impact on our institution and on the country."
Sithole's political career began in local government as a councillor in Ekurhuleni, followed by service in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, before taking office as a Member of Parliament in 2010 — a role he held for 15 years.
As Deputy Chief Whip of the IFP and a key member of the Chief Whips Forum and National Assembly Programme Committee, Sithole was instrumental in shaping legislative priorities and strengthening parliamentary oversight.
Mothapo says Sithol’s calm leadership and institutional wisdom were valued across party lines.
"He was more than a party representative, he was a unifying figure, a democrat, and a tireless advocate for justice and transformation", added Mothapo.
The circumstances surrounding Sithole’s death have sparked outrage, with Parliament strongly condemning the ongoing violence that continues to threaten public safety.
Parliament has called for urgent action from law enforcement to bring the perpetrators to justice and protect the sanctity of South Africa’s democratic institutions.
Parliament has extended its heartfelt condolences to the Sithole family, the IFP leadership and membership, and all colleagues who worked with him in the legislature.
"South Africa has lost a patriot, a champion for the people, and a voice for the vulnerable. His absence will be deeply felt," said Mothapo.
Sithole is remembered not only for his political leadership but for his humility, dignity, and unwavering commitment to public service.
Gauteng Police have confirmed the search for three suspects in connection with the shooting that also left two other people wounded.
