Democratic Alliance (DA) chief whip John Steenhuisen says Parliament should move swiftly on adopting rules on how to remove the public protector from office.

There are currently no standing rules or regulations in place to have the head of a Chapter 9 institution removed from office.

Parliament's Rules Committee will have to devise a process for the removal of the public protector after the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services on Tuesday referred the matter to National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise.

The matter was brought forward by Steenhuisen after he requested that Parliament initiate proceedings to remove Busisiwe Mkhwebane as the public protector.

The committee's chairperson Bulelani says the proceedings moving forward will now be determined by the Rules Committee.

Steenhuisen says the matter should move because the longer Mkhwebane is in office the more damage will be done to the credibility of the office.

"The Democratic Alliance supports the decision made this morning by Justice Portfolio Committee to refer the matter back to the Speaker so that parliament can adopt the rules that will guide the process that will remove the public protector.

"Given the litigious nature of Mrs Mkhwebane as well as her propensity to squander public funds in frivolous court cases it is prudent - we believe - to firewall this process properly to stop her from interdicting or trying to interfere with Parliament."
