Parly to deal with criminals at Desmond Tutu Refugee centre

Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs has expressed its concern over criminal activities taking place outside the Desmond Tutu Refugee Office in Pretoria.

Portfolio Committee Chairperson, Hlomani Chauke, says the committee has also discovered that there are home affairs officials allegedly involved in the fraudulent processes of asylum seekers activities.

"Outside the home affairs offices ... there are syndicates that operate that harass, in fact, extort money and rob openly asylum seekers that come to the offices," says Chauke.

Chauke adds the committee also discovered that police are allegedly involved in the criminal activities outside the premises of the Office.

He says the police would allegedly put up a roadblock early in the mornings, targeting asylum seekers.

"They would take their money, whatever belongings and extort money from them."

Chauke says the committee will escalate the matter to the offices of Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba, and Minister Police Bheki Cele.
