Parly ‘saddened’ by Covid-19 deaths in Gauteng education sector

Parliament’s basic education committee has sent condolences to family members of those in the Gauteng education sector who have lost their lives due to Covid-19.

On Friday, Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi announced that three senior managers from his department lost their lives due to complications from the virus.


The MEC also revealed 1159 positive cases have been reported in the provincial education department.

  

"We are saddened by the situation and wish those that are still alive a speedy recovery. We are of the view that at some point we will recover from this," says the committee’s spokesperson Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba.


The province, which is now officially the epicentre of the virus, has 93 044 cumulative cases, 31 831 recoveries and 580 deaths.

The MEC briefed the media on the latest Covid-19 statistics on Friday. Lesufi said 294 pupils and 753 teachers have tested positive for the virus. "Whereas 76 admin staff tested positive and 33 general assistance staff tested positive and only three Youth Brigade member tested positive.
