Parts of Tshwane still without power after Wapadrand substation explosion

Residents in several areas of Tshwane were still without electricity on Monday morning following a fire at the Wapadrand substation.

An explosion of the underground cable in Disselboom street on Saturday evening has left some residents of Pretoria East in the dark.
The city’s MMC for Utilities Phillip Nel says the northern part of the affected area might come online by lunchtime.
“We have been testing the equipment inside the substation, most of which is completed. The team is ready to do the testing on the external cables to switch on the first phase of the repair.
“I need to emphasise that the estimated times we are discussing here are when we will energise the substation. Thereafter the team will energise the different secondary substations and suburbs. This will take a few hours following when we have energised the Wapadrand substation.
“Power will only be restored to users once this entire process is completed.Target for the energisation for the first phase of the repair is still midday,” said Nel.
The areas that might get the lights back on the first phase include Wapadrand, Equestria, Silverlakes, Six Fountains, Tygerpoort and Zwavelpoort.”
Nel says the second phase of the repair is also on track.
“The panels from the Orchards substation have arrived and should be sufficient to replace the burned panels. We will be installing them and will provide more updates on the ETR for Faerie Glen, Olympus and Boardwalk later today.
“Unfortunately, these new panels will all be energised at the same time because we cannot energise the panels individually as they are connected through the Busbar.”
