Gauteng traffic police spokesperson, Sello Maremane, said pedestrian fatalities remain a concern, especially among young adults aged 25–34.

“Road fatalities are attributed to various factors such as failure to wear reflective gear in low-light areas, disregard of traffic signals, distracted driving and walking, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and jaywalking, amongst others,” said Maremane.

He said to work against these fatalities, the South African Police Service, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and the Metro Police departments would monitor major routes and crime hotspot areas.

“Law enforcement agencies will conduct heightened law enforcement operations across the province to ensure the safety of the public and to prevent the loss of life.”

Maremane also said community Patrollers would be deployed to hotspot areas and key public transport networks to assist the public, including vulnerable groups such as women and children.
