Persistent January rainfall 'unusual' - SAWS

The South African Weather Service said on Tuesday the ongoing rainy weather over the inland provinces is unusual for this time of the year.

Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West have experienced heavy rains over the past few weeks, leading to localised flooding in many areas.

SAWS forecaster Thabo Makgoro said more rainfall is expected this week before things start clearing up over the weekend.

“It’s not normal because we had a tropical moisture that came in for a long time, so hence it was not a normal weather event. Usually, we do get some rain during January, but not such high amounts."

Makgoro said it is unlikely that the tropical storm Dikeledi will affect South Africa.

Tropical storm Dikeledi slammed into northern Mozambique Monday after leaving at least three people dead in Madagascar and triggering floods in the French territory of Mayotte.

"The likelihood of it is quite little because now Dikeledi will be moving through the Mozambican channel, and then it will move more to the east. So it will not be affecting South Africa," he added.
