JRA: Phase one of Lillian Ngoyi Street rehab ‘almost complete’
Updated | By Selaki Ledwaba
The City of Johannesburg says the rehabilitation of Lillian Ngoyi Street in the CBD is almost complete.

It says 86% of the work has been done.
This includes the construction of new and reinforced tunnels, as well as the backfilling and compaction works.
In February, Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero promised that the first phase of the rehabilitation would be complete by the end of August.
The road had been severely damaged by a methane gas explosion in 2023, which resulted in the death of one person.
Forty others were injured in the explosion.
The Johannesburg Road Agency CEO, Zweli Nyathi, said the remainder of the rehabilitation project is progressing as expected.
He said that of the R192 million set aside for the project, R64 million has been spent on the first phase.
“A total of 27 Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises have benefited from the project, and 38 general workers are currently on site,” Nyathi added.
“The contractor has performed exceptionally well in ensuring that the projected timelines are met, despite adverse weather conditions earlier in the year. Working closely with the JRA, a robust work plan was developed by extending the daily construction hours, including weekends, to eliminate any possibilities of delays.”
Lilian Ngoyi Street between Harrison and Kruis Street, and the affected north-south roads such as Joubert, Rissik and Eloff Streets will be open to traffic once the project's first phase is completed at the end of August.
“Lilian Ngoyi Street is a critical commuter route that not only connects two of the largest taxi ranks in the inner city but also serves as a key access road to surrounding businesses and public service facilities,” said Nyathi, adding that a block-by-block renovation plan will be carried out as part of phase two of the project, starting in September, to reduce the impact on traffic.
He said portions of the 1.8-kilometre road will be intermittently blocked to facilitate traffic flow along intersections.
