Social media users shared photos of the situation at various Unisa campuses on Friday morning.

Unisa's Lusani Netshitomboni says the strike has been very disruptive.

"We are right in the middle of registration for the 2020 academic year and the fact that the services have been disrupted obviously will impact on the students," says Netshitomboni.

However, he says the university has decided to extend registration until 1 February, and are also urging students to make use of their online registration option, which he says is working.

Netshitomboni says the strike comes in the wake of a deadlock reached with unions over wages.

"The difference at this stage is one percent Management is offering 6% and unions are demanding a 7% increase, says Netshitomboni.

He notes: "They've arrived at this stage after a serious of negotiations and the gap is narrowing as we go on."
