South Africans will head to the ballot box in May 2024 in what is called the general elections, but polls show the real showdown will be on provincial level – one of the three ballot papers voters will be asked to make their mark.
Provinces like KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng have emerged as so-called battleground provinces where it is forecast to be a tight fight to the bitter end to determine which political party will emerge as the winner, that is if there will be an outright winner at all.
Endorsed by former president Jacob Zuma, the umKhonto weSizwe (MK) Party is enjoying widespread support thanks to one of the province’s most popular politicians.
Like all the country’s provinces, KZN has its own service delivery challenges from water, sanitation, electricity, and ailing infrastructure to corruption, unemployment and access to housing.
By all accounts, the ANC’s hold on power in the economic hub of Gauteng is hanging by a thread.
Gauteng has seen serious decay in infrastructure, a lack of basic services, a major water crisis, rising unemployment, and crime.
The Western Cape is the only province not governed by the ANC.
However, the province has also had its fair share of challenges – including gang violence and under-developed townships.
