Police officer shot and killed in Delft

Police have confirmed the death of an officer after a lone gunman opened fire on three officers during a patrol in Delft, on the outskirts Cape Town.

The incident took place on Sunday and left two other officers injured.
"The police were able to respond immediately. They shot the suspect in his leg and arrested him immediately," says national police spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo.

The suspect is recovering in hospital under police guard.
"He is expected to face charges of murder, at least four counts of attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm," says Naidoo.
On Thursday, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) was deployed to Cape Town crime-ridden townships to counter a surge of shootings, gang violence and murders.
