Power restored after Brakfontein substation fire

Power has been restored to parts of Centurion following a 12-day power outage caused by a fire at the Brakfontein substation.

The City of Tshwane restored power to the last of the residents in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
"I'm pleased to report that 95% of the areas had been restored by 1 am. The team continues with the work. Despite being on site for over a week, the team has finished strong and in good spirits. We regret and apologise that residents were inconvenienced and left without power for so long," said Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya, who were at the substation early on Tuesday morning.
A fire broke out at the 132/11kV Substation in Brakfontein substation earlier this month, causing significant damage to cables and 11kV feeder panels.
Following assessments of the fire, Tshwane MMC for Utility Services, Frans Boshielo, confirmed that the theft and vandalism of control cables caused the fire.
Moya further emphasised that the substation was severely damaged.
"The severity of this damage has been too much, but they've been able to complete the work. And we appreciate the frustration of residents, but I think it's important that we express our gratitude to the team for the beautiful work that they've done here. So the team is continuing this morning to make sure that all the areas will be restored.
"If there are any issues in the morning, residents are encouraged to call the call centre to report any, because by the morning we would have the majority of the areas restored."
