Power restored to northern Joburg suburbs

City Power has restored the electricity supply to Rosebank, Dunkeld, Parkwood, Hyde Park and surrounding areas, after a trip on Tuesday night after load shedding in the area.

The outage was caused by low levels of SF gas oil (sulphur hexafluoride) from the Rosebank substation.
Load shedding made a surprise comeback on Tuesday, and will be implemented between 4 pm and 10 pm until Thursday.
"The SF gas plays a critical role in insulating high-voltage circuit breakers and preventing short circuits or flashovers in the switchgear," said City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.
"When the gas levels drop below safe operating standards, the protection systems automatically trip to avoid equipment damage and ensure public safety."
Mangena called on their customers to reduce consumption during peak hours.
"During load shedding, circuit breakers are opened and closed more frequently, and this repeated switching on and off accelerates the leakages or depletion of the gas oil.
"Without sufficient levels of this gas, circuit breakers cannot safely operate, necessitating immediate maintenance before supply can be restored."
