Mahikeng Mayor Tshepiso Mphehlo has described late Oscar-winning actor Presley Chweneyagae as an inspiration to the youth of North West.

Chweneyagae, who passed away last Tuesday at the age of 40, is best known for his role in the 2005 film Tsotsi, which earned the country its first Oscar for best foreign language film.
Speaking at Chweneyagae’s memorial at the Mmabatho Convention Centre in Mahikeng on Tuesday, Mphehlo said the movie's production was a pivotal moment for the North West Arts and Culture Department.
Chweneyagae’s acting journey started at the province's Mmabana Arts and Culture Foundation.
“It was during a time that we, as young stars growing up in Mahikeng, had hope for a better life, because our dusty streets had produced international movie stars like Tsotsi. For us, as young stars, it provided hope, and we believed that challenges in our background could be overcome,” said Mphehlo.
The mayor honoured other Mahikeng-born artists, including HHP, Fifi Cooper and TUKS, saying their rise was a sign that the youth in the province would rise for greatness.
“We are gathered here to bid farewell once again to a torch bearer of hope who we have seen illuminate our screens with his talent.”
Chweneyagae will be laid to rest on Saturday at the Zandfontein cemetery.
