Protesting TUT students to ‘shut down’ Pretoria West campus

The South African Student Congress (Sasco) at TUT says it plans to shut down the university’s Pretoria West campus on Wednesday.

The students want TUT to keep the doors of the library on campus open 24-hours a day.
Students also have several other concerns, including the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, campus residences and student transport.
Sasco TUT Rand chairperson Duncan Tsheole says libraries should always be open.
“We call upon the library to be opened for 24 hours, the closing of the library is a reversal of our gains precisely because we fought for access to information in our lifetime.
“We call upon the university to speedily resolve the issue of printing machines at i-centres to be fully functional. This is a sabotage to our students who must get their work done and it must be castigated with the contempt it deserves.”
Tsheole says they also want TUT to release the certificates of graduates who have been funded by by NSFAS.
“There are students who have been funded by NSFAS who graduated without them getting their certificates and academic records until to date.
“We call upon the university and graduations office to give all students who have been funded by NSFAS their certificates so that they can be integrated into the workplace.”
Tsheole doesn’t believe the march will have an impact on the students who attending lectures.
“I don’t think that there will be an element of disrupting classes. Those that will be attending will attend and those who want to come to the march will come to the march. Simple as that.”
