It's understood groups of people blocked the main gates at Westville and Pietermaritzburg, preventing staff from entering the premises.

There was apparently also an attempt to set an office alight at Howard College.

The university's Normah Zondo says the call to protest was made by the EFF Student Command, encouraging all new and returning students to come to campus to register.

Zondo has stressed they have an online-only registration policy.

"The university strongly condemns all attempts to disrupt the functioning of the university and wishes to restate its position that registration is strictly online and no individuals will be allowed on campus without the required university access permit.

"Our security personnel supported by the members of SAPS and private security are monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of legitimate students, staff and property."

On Friday, a group of about 50 protesters are said to have stormed Westville campus and pelted security officers with stones.

A guardhouse and a car were damaged.
