Queen Mantfombi Dlamini named regent of Zulu nation

Queen Mantfombi MaDlamini Zulu has been named the regent of the Zulu nation.

The head wife will take the throne until the late monarch King Goodwill Zwelithini KaBhekulu’s successor is chosen. 


AmaZulu traditional prime minister Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi made the announcement on Wednesday after lengthy deliberations about the throne. 


The King’s was read during Wednesday’s meeting, after his untimely death earlier this month.  


“Today in the presence of more than 200 members of the royal family, His Majesty’s will was read by his lawyers. In line with his wishes of His Majesty and his family would like to announce that the Her Majesty Queen Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu will act as regent of the Zulu nation during her interregnum,” said Buthelezi.   


“While Her Majesty is the de facto regent, further decisions on the succession itself of the Zulu monarchy will not be announced until the family’s mourning period is over.”

The family will observe a 3-month mourning period.  


“Three months is for mourning, it is for family mourning according to our tradition and she cannot do anything while in mourning, she will be assisted by the royal council in the meantime,” Buthelezi added.  


Buthelezi said the King gave the Zulu nation the go-ahead to resume ploughing their lands and planting from Friday.
