R22 billion lost due to corruption in health sector
South Africa loses an estimated R22 billion annually due to fraud and corruption in the health sector.
Deputy Justice Minister John Jeffrey says the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is working on recovering over R14 billion of the lost money.
Jeffrey was speaking at the launch of a new anti-corruption forum in the health sector at the Union Buildings on Tuesday.
The launch was headed by President Cyril Ramaphosa along with Health Minister Zweli Mkhize and head of the National Prosecuting Authority Shamila Batohi.
Jeffrey says the corruption in the health system erodes much-needed resources.
"The report stated that corruption and fraud can cripple our health care system.
"Ultimately, fraud and corruption erodes much-needed resources thereby denying people quality health care."
