Ramaphosa assures action against individuals implicated in ‘Gold Mafia’

President Cyril Ramaphosa says action will be taken against individuals implicated in any illicit financial activities as alleged by an Al Jazeera documentary, titled ‘Gold Mafia’.

Ramaphosa was answering questions in the National Assembly on Thursday afternoon on government's efforts to fight corruption and tackle allegations of illegal financial activities.
The Al Jazeera documentary claims to have exposed corrupt dealings of officials in Southern Africa and mostly by Zimbabwean officials.
However, serious allegations also come to light against some South Africans for being involved in apparent dodgy dealings.
Ramaphosa says the government takes the allegations very seriously.
"We are committed to the preservation of the integrity of the financial system in the interest of the broader economy and ordinary citizens.
“Investigative and regulatory authorities will act in accordance with their mandate, including in coordination with other jurisdictions where necessary to take action against those found guilty of wrongdoing," says Ramaphosa.
He says an enquiry has been registered by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation to investigate the syndicates and individuals involved.
"This investigation is at an enquiry stage and no arrests have been made yet.
“Details of the steps that are being taken cannot be divulged at this stage without compromising the investigation.
“At the same time, Government is working with the Financial Action Task Force to implement an action plan to strengthen the country’s efforts to counter money laundering and financing of terrorism."
