Ramaphosa defends NPA, to meet with Batohi

President Cyril Ramaphosa says he still has confidence in the leadership of the National Prosecuting Authority.

The NPA has come under fire following its failure to prosecute several high-profile cases, including those linked to state capture, as well as the sexual assault case against Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso.
This has led to growing calls for the axing of NPA head Shamila Batohi.
Speaking at the Sefako Makgatho Primary School in Pretoria on Tuesday, Ramaphosa said the NPA has also achieved considerable success.
“The NPA has really done considerable work to stabilise itself as well as go on with various prosecutions. Quite often, we look at where there is failure or where there are mistakes, and we think the whole system is not working,” said Ramaphosa.
The president said he will meet with Batohi to discuss the systemic challenges that she said gave her sleepless nights during an interview with Newzroom Afrika.
Ramaphosa also addressed claims by Batohi that there is political interference in the work of the NPA.
“I don't believe that there is state capture taking place in the NPA,” Ramaphosa said.
“I do believe that there are some really good prosecutors in the NPA who are putting a lot of effort. A number of cases have been prosecuted, including those that came out of the Zondo commission.”
