Ramaphosa picks Mcebisi Jonas to mend relations with US
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed former Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas as his Special Envoy to the United States.

The appointment comes amid ongoing challenges in the SA-US relationship, including disagreements over trade policies, foreign policy positions, and South Africa’s stance on global conflicts.
Tensions between the two countries have risen since President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the contentious Expropriation Act into law, enraging US President Donald Trump's administration.
The move has triggered aid cuts by Washington and outbursts from Trump, citing concerns over land expropriation and alleged discrimination against white farmers.
The United States is South Africa's second-biggest trading partner and Pretoria is anxious to preserve this exchange.
Other disagreements between the two are over some of South Africa's foreign policies, including its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice over the war in Gaza.
In a statement released on Monday, Ramaphosa said Jonas will be responsible for leading high-level engagements with U.S. government officials and private sector leaders to promote South Africa’s interests.
"In this capacity, Mr Jonas is entrusted with the responsibility to advance South Africa's diplomatic, trade and bilateral priorities.
"He will lead negotiations, foster strategic partnerships, and engage with U.S. government officials and private-sector leaders,” said Ramaphosa.
Jonas is a seasoned leader with extensive experience in government and international investment.
He previously served as one of four Presidential Investment Envoys appointed in 2018 to attract global capital into South Africa.
"As a former Deputy Finance Minister, he brings considerable expertise to this role. He currently serves as the Independent Non-Executive Chairman of MTN Group, a position he will retain alongside his new responsibilities,” Ramaphosa added.
Ramaphosa emphasised the historical significance of the SA–U.S. relationship and said the appointment signals a renewed commitment to mutual cooperation.
"In the interest of our country, our region, and our continent, I remain committed to rebuilding and maintaining this relationship on the basis of mutual respect, recognition of sovereignty, and shared benefit,” he said.
Jonas’s background in economic development, public service, and diplomacy positions him to play a key role in resetting the tone between Pretoria and Washington.
"I hereby announce the appointment of Mr Mcebisi Jonas as my Special Envoy to the USA, serving as the official representative of the President and the Government of South Africa."
