Ramaphosa was flanked by Minister in The Presidency Jackson Mthembu, Minister of Employment and Labour Thulas Nxesi, Minister for the Public Service and Administration Senzo Mchunu and Deputy Minister of Health Joe Phaahla.

Wage talks and working conditions were on the table for discussion.

Nehawu marched to the Union Buildings earlier this month - demanding government honours its three-year wage agreement of 8%.

The union is also demanding that health frontline workers be equipped with sufficient protective gear and for government to provide a safe working environment during the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the time, the province had embarked on a R1 billion housing project. But the department decided to deviate from the normal open tender process and compiled a database of contractors instead. Zwane, who is also a former minister of mineral resources, said the provincial government.

The President’s acting spokesperson Tyrone Seale said government would continue talks with the public sector union.

“The meeting agreed that government and Nehawu will continue work on the issues raised in the Nehawu memorandum that are currently being discussed by task teams comprising government and Nehawu.

“Reports of these task teams will be presented to a meeting of senior leadership of government and public sector unions who will meet again soon on a mutually convenient date to develop solutions in the interest of workers, the public sector and the nation and economy at large,” Sealed added.

The union has been at loggerheads with government for months over unmet demands.
