Rand Water kicks off major maintenance, impacting Tshwane

The City of Tshwane has warned residents of widespread water supply interruptions in several areas over the next two weeks as Rand Water embarks on a critical 16-day inspection and cleaning programme of the Hartebeeshoek Reservoir.

The maintenance, scheduled to begin at 7 am on Thursday, will be concluded on Friday, 18 July.

The water board says it forms part of regulatory compliance with national Dam Safety Regulations.

According to Rand Water, technicians will spend the first few days isolating valves and draining the reservoir into the municipal system.

A bypass valve will then be installed to keep supply flowing to low-lying areas, although at reduced pressure.

However, high-lying areas are expected to experience complete water outages during the maintenance period.

The cleaning and disinfection of the reservoir is expected to take another nine days, after which supply will gradually be restored to impacted zones.

Several associated reservoirs will be affected namely including Akasia, The Orchards, Karen Park, Chantelle, Rosslyn, Heatherview, Clarina, and Florauna, Ga-Rankuwa (all units), Medunsa, De Wildt, and Ga-Rankuwa Industrial, Soshanguve (multiple sections including A, B, TT, VV, XX, East and South), Mabopane (all extensions), Winterveld, Klipfontein, Onderstepoort, De Beers, Zoutpan, Rietgat, and surrounding farming areas.

Water supply to large industrial consumers, including SAB Rosslyn, will also be affected.

To mitigate the impact, roaming water tankers will be dispatched to affected communities "as and when the need arises,"  said City of Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba.
