Rape a ‘profound violation of trust, humanity’

Limpopo MEC for Social Development, Florence Radzilani, has challenged men and society at large to expose perpetrators of gender-based violence and femicide.

She said that silence and complicity enable crimes involving GBV to persist while not fostering a supportive environment for victims.
Radzilani was reacting to the arrest of a primary school teacher accused of raping a Grade 7 pupil.
"MEC Radzilani views the arrest of the suspect as a major breakthrough, considering the severity of the incident," said the MEC's spokesperson, Joshua Kwapa.
"She commended the police for the arrest and passionately condemned in the strongest terms possible the heinous crime of rape, which leaves lifelong scars on the victim. Such behaviour is not only criminal but also a profound violation of trust and humanity. "
According to police, the 58-year-old teacher raped the young girl several times since November 2024 until March this year.
The teacher attached to the Capricorn South Education District outside Polokwane was arrested on Monday after another teacher reported him.
He is expected to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Wednesday
