Rehabilitation of Lillian Ngoyi Street ‘only 22% complete’
Updated | By Bulletin / Jacaranda FM
The Johannesburg metro has confirmed that the Lilian Ngoyi Street rehabilitation project in the CBD is 22% complete - a year after a devastating explosion.

The methane gas explosion resulted in the death of one person, while 40 others sustained injuries.
Mayoral committee member for Transport Kenny Kunene said that the project has stalled, with dire consequences for road users, businesses and residents.
So far, more than R17 million has been spent out of the total of almost R180 million allocated for the project's completion.
Kunene told SABC News the project was halted due to contractor issues:
“It’s a complex project,” he said.
“There are electric pipes. There are services underground, and sewers, and there is water from Joburg Water so that the flats are still able to get water. They’ve replaced the electrical cables that were damaged. So that is the progress so far.”
The city originally said the damage would be repaired by December 2024 at an estimated cost of R200 million.
